The traditional model of focal epilepsy surgery is the localization and resection of the epileptogenic zone. However, a significant minority of patients with epilepsy continue to have seizures after resection, coach which shows the level of incomplete knowledge currently has on this subject. To try to alleviate this deficiency, a review study has introduced some concepts of functional connectivity and complex networks, with particular emphasis on their application to the study of neurophysiological recordings of patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy, especially temporal lobe.
In order to correctly understand new developments in the area of complex networks and their applications to the study of epilepsy, the authors review the basic concepts of the methodology of complex networks, synchronization and functional connectivity, highlighting some of the more recent work where functional neurophysiological resonances records of patients with focal epilepsy under this new approach are analyzed.
According to the authors, the presurgical evaluation of epilepsy drug should be aimed at the characterization of the epileptic network instead of studying and locate, as is currently done, particular areas of the cerebral cortex, ie, the epileptogenic zone and zones ictal beginning. This should serve to make the transition to the new vision of epilepsy as a disease of the cortical network affected, coach especially in regard to surgical treatment.
